What is IPERS, and why does it matter for a job?

IPERS — the Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System — is a defined-benefit pension that pays a guaranteed monthly income for life, calculated by a formula rather than stock-market performance. It covers more than 400,000 current and retired Iowans (about 1 in 10). A job that is IPERS-covered builds that lifetime pension.

Which Iowa employers offer IPERS?

Under Iowa Code chapter 97B, IPERS coverage is the default for nearly every public employer: state agencies, all 99 counties and their cities, every public school district, Area Education Agencies, community colleges, public universities, and county hospitals. The main exception is full-time police and firefighters in larger civil-service cities, who are under MFPRSI.
